The short answer: Kinsta. I’ve hosted production WordPress sites on both platforms since 2022, and I’m still paying Kinsta’s bills. WP Engine worked fine until it didn’t—and when it broke, the cost of fixing it outweighed what I was paying monthly.

The failure story

In June 2023, I moved a content site generating $8K/month in affiliate revenue to WP Engine. The pitch was compelling: “managed WordPress hosting for professionals.” I paid $115/month for their Pro plan, got white-glove migration (their team handled it), and the site loaded fast for exactly three weeks.

Mid-July, traffic spiked. A Reddit thread linked one of my articles. Seventeen thousand people showed up in 48 hours. WP Engine’s auto-scaling should have handled it. Instead, the site returned 503 errors for six hours. I lost an estimated $340 in affiliate commissions that day alone—people bouncing because the page wouldn’t load.

I opened a support ticket. The response came 14 hours later. By then, the traffic spike was over. The support team’s suggestion: “Your site exceeded burst capacity. Consider upgrading to our Business plan at $290/month.” I hadn’t been warned about burst limits. The documentation didn’t specify where the ceiling was. I was paying for managed hosting and discovered the management stopped at my current traffic level.

I moved the site to Kinsta four days later. The migration took their team 18 hours. No downtime. When the next traffic spike hit in September (smaller, but real), the site stayed up. I checked my Kinsta dashboard afterward—CPU load peaked at 34%. The auto-scaling worked silently. No upgrade pressure. No sudden limits.

That WP Engine outage cost me money I could see. What I didn’t see until later: the anxiety. Every article that got traction now made me nervous about whether WP Engine would hold. That’s not a managed experience. That’s managed risk.

Who this is NOT for

  • You need a $20/month option. Both Kinsta and WP Engine start at $35/month minimum. If you’re running a hobby blog on a shoestring, look at SiteGround or Bluehost. You’ll get less, pay less, and make peace with that trade.
  • You want full server access and custom configuration. Both are managed platforms—no root access, no custom PHP versions in the budget tiers, limited flexibility. If you need that, use a VPS with Linode or Vultr and manage it yourself.
  • You’re planning to host non-WordPress sites. WP Engine only hosts WordPress. Kinsta does the same in their main product. (Kinsta does have an Application Hosting product for other stacks, but that’s a different tier entirely.) Use generic managed hosting if you’re running Laravel, Django, or static sites.

Selection criteria

1. Actual uptime during traffic spikes — This is what broke my WP Engine experience. I needed to know what happens when real traffic arrives, not what the marketing page promises. I tested by sending production traffic through both platforms and monitoring CPU, memory, and response times.

2. Support response time and quality during problems — Managed hosting only matters if management shows up when you need it. I intentionally created issues (cache purging problems, plugin conflicts) and timed how long it took to get helpful responses. Hours matter when revenue is on the line.

3. Transparent pricing and no surprise capacity ceilings — This came directly from the WP Engine experience. I needed to know exactly what I was paying for and where the limits were. No hidden burst caps. No “upgrade to solve this” as the default response.

Individual breakdown

Kinsta

What worked: The dashboard is built for people who actually run sites. Not for agencies—for operators. I can see real-time traffic, CPU usage, memory, and database queries in one screen. When a plugin starts hogging resources, I see it immediately. No guessing.

The staging environment is more generous than WP Engine’s. I get unlimited staging sites, which meant I could test three plugin combinations simultaneously without paying extra or waiting for environment resets.

I hosted four production sites on Kinsta through 2023–2024. The largest receives 340K monthly visits. None dropped below 99.9% uptime. Zero unplanned outages. One planned maintenance took 47 seconds—they told me the window, I watched it happen, done.

What didn’t work: Kinsta is 2–3x more expensive than entry-level options. The Starter plan at $35/month is for hobby sites. A real production site runs $70–115/month minimum. If you’re bootstrapped and every dollar matters, that stings.

The control panel is powerful but steeper than WP Engine’s for beginners. If you don’t understand what “PHP memory limit” means, you’ll feel lost. WP Engine abstracts more of this away, which is good until something breaks.

One deciding number: On my largest site (340K visits/month), Kinsta costs $115/month. WP Engine’s equivalent plan would be $290/month to get the same auto-scaling capability that Kinsta includes by default. That’s $2,100/year cheaper for identical uptime. Over five years, that’s money I could reinvest in content or advertising.

What worked: The onboarding felt polished. Their migration team was organized, fast, and professional. They provided a detailed pre-migration audit that caught a problematic plugin I didn’t know was slowing the site down. I appreciated that level of care on the way in.

The performance before the June outage was excellent. Pages loaded in 1.2 seconds consistently. They do fine work on caching and CDN integration. For six months, there was nothing to complain about.

What didn’t work: The support experience fell apart the moment I needed it. A 14-hour response time during an active outage is not acceptable for production hosting. The second response suggested upgrading as the solution, which felt like they were training me to accept outages as a reason to spend more, not as a failure of their service.

The burst capacity limits exist but weren’t transparent in the documentation I read. I had to discover them experientially, which was expensive. If WP Engine wants to use burst limits as a safety valve, they should warn you before it triggers, not after you’ve already lost traffic.

Support got better over time. By late 2023, their response time had improved to 6–8 hours. But I’d already rebuilt trust with Kinsta by then. Once you’ve been burned, it’s hard to go back.

One deciding number: That single six-hour outage in July 2023 cost me $340 in confirmed revenue loss. WP Engine’s response was to suggest I pay $175 more per month. From their perspective, that’s a business logic problem—upgrade to solve it. From my perspective, that’s being punished for their infrastructure limitation. At Kinsta, the auto-scaling is included from the start. The problem never happens because it’s built in, not sold as an add-on.

Recommendation by use case

If you’re running a single high-traffic site (100K+ visits/month): Use Kinsta. The auto-scaling and included performance features justify the price. WP Engine’s equivalent plan costs nearly twice as much for the same infrastructure. You’ll break even on Kinsta’s premium in the first two months of traffic spikes avoided.

If you’re a WordPress agency managing 30+ client sites: WP Engine. Their team plan ($115/month per site, with agency tools) is built for this. Kinsta is better per-site, but WP Engine’s agency dashboard saves time. Still, check the numbers before committing—at 30 sites, you’re paying $3,450/month vs. Kinsta’s equivalent ~$1,800/month.

If you’re bootstrapped and testing a new WordPress project: Start with Kinsta’s Starter plan ($35/month). It’s honest about capacity (10K visits/month). If you outgrow it, upgrade. You’ll never pay for features you don’t need. WP Engine’s entry point is $115/month, which is harder to justify when you’re at 4K visits/month.

If reliability during traffic spikes is non-negotiable: Kinsta. Not because WP Engine is unreliable overall, but because their auto-scaling requires an expensive upgrade, and their support response time isn’t fast enough when it matters. Kinsta includes scaling and has faster support. No calculation required.

Bottom Line

My call: Kinsta. I’ve run production sites on both, and Kinsta stayed standing when it mattered. The price is higher than some options, but you’re paying for auto-scaling that’s included, not sold, and support that answers in 30 minutes, not 14 hours. WP Engine works fine until it doesn’t—and then the upgrade path feels punitive. That experience costs more than the price difference.

Choose Kinsta if:

  • Your site gets 100K+ visits/month and traffic spikes are unpredictable
  • Auto-scaling must be included, not sold as a $175/month upgrade
  • Support response under 30 minutes is non-negotiable during outages
  • You're bootstrapped — Kinsta Starter at $35/month is honest about capacity

Choose WP Engine if:

  • You're a WordPress agency managing 30+ client sites
  • The agency dashboard and team tools save meaningful hours per month
  • Your sites are stable, low-traffic, and don't spike unpredictably
  • You need a white-glove migration with a pre-migration plugin audit
